I am a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years of experience in varied fields. I am also a researcher in the field of women’s financial independence and am currently writing my thesis. I have written a book titled Women, Beware of the Freaking Plothole. To sum it up, I stand for women’s emancipation — I read about it, I research it, and I advocate for it. But when it came to protecting myself in the face of domestic abuse, I was completely unaware of my rights. Domestic abuse often goes unrecognized because it manifests in everyday situations that we wrongly consider normal. Many women do not realize when ordinary domestic tussles turn into abuse. For example, I only learned these facts after reading up and watching some videos shared with me by lawyers: a. A woman cannot be forced to spend her earnings on household expenses — it is the husband’s legal responsibility to provide for the family. She may contribute voluntarily, but it is her choice. b. Calling a woman “mad” or “mentally unstable” during a fight to silence her amounts to abuse. c. A woman does not have to leave her home in case of separation; she has an equal right to reside in the shared household. Most women will never truly understand what constitutes domestic abuse and, therefore, will never defend themselves. Many marriages break because neither the abuser nor the victim recognizes the abuse. If such awareness were created among young couples, we could prevent many relationships from collapsing under the weight of unacknowledged violence. On a positive note, when I confronted my husband with these facts, he immediately acknowledged his behaviour and changed. I have seen the transformative power of awareness, and I hope that more women and men can empower themselves in the same way — simply by understanding their rights.
