Article 15: The Constitution’s take on Discrimination
Nyaaya
In the movie Article 15, we see an upright police officer going on a crusade against violent caste-based crimes and discrimination. Both the title of the movie and the protagonist are inspired by Article 15 of the Constitution of India, 1950, which says that the Government should not discriminate against any citizen based only on religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth.
Based on these reasons, citizens cannot be denied or restricted from:
- accessing shops, public restaurants, hotels and places of public entertainment; or
- using wells, tanks, bathing ghats, roads and places maintained by Government funds, or meant for public use.
However, the Government can make special provisions for women and children, and for the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
