The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown brought with itself another crisis triggered, that of increasing cases of domestic violence against women. These survivors were now locked with their abusers at home and in such circumstances where they could not turn to other safeguarding mechanisms due to the lockdown restrictions.
As a result, the National Commission of Women (NCW) launched a WhatsApp number 0721-7735372, where anyone could report a situation of domestic violence 26and to access help.
In addition to this, other existing helpline numbers like Women Helpline (All India) Women in Distress -1091; Women Helpline Domestic Abuse- 181; Police- 100; emergency response support system to provide immediate rescue and support to women in distress- 112, are also functioning.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences have teamed up to provide psychological support via a helpline number 080-4611007 to women facing domestic violence at home.
