Is your landlord asking you to pay house rent during the COVID-19 lockdown period? The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an order which states that for the next one month i.e. till 29.04.2020, no landlord can ask a worker/migrant who is his tenant to:
- Vacate the property
- Demand payment of rent
Any violation of this will lead to jail time as well as a fine. So if you are a worker, including a migrant worker who cannot pay rent during this period, your landlord cannot evict you from the house. If you have a lease agreement, only you or anyone you give permission to has the right to live in the rented property. However, there are certain circumstances where the landlord can evict you from the house. These circumstances do not matter during this lockdown period. Tenants are protected from eviction during this period.
